The Costa Rica Tourism Board is proud to launch the Pura Vida Pledge, educating visitors as to the real meaning of responsible tourism and the actions, they as travellers to the destination, can make.
Pura Vida itself is a mantra for Ticos in Costa Rica, meaning "pure life" or, even more so "full of life" symbolising the positive energy to be experienced and found there. Costa Rica's commitment to the environment is a way of life.
As a world leader in sustainability, in 2019 the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) recognised Costa Rica as the Champions of the Earth award, the UN's highest environmental honour, placing value on Costa Rica's role in the protection of nature and efforts to combat climate change.
With its aim to be carbon neutral by 2050, already 29% of Costa Rica's energy sources are renewable and after a mass reforestation programme, over 50% of rainforests have been recovered. Costa Rica has been successful in placing environmental concerns at the heart of its political and economic policies - sustainable development is very much in Costa Ricans' DNA.
As part of the Pura Vida Pledge, Costa Rica is encouraging visitors to take one of four actions to ensure their holiday is as responsible as possible.
So, when planning your next trip to Costa Rica, don't forget to consider what you can do to continue to make Costa Rica one of the world's leading sustainable countries by making your Pura Vida Pledge!
